Science and Mysticism

Posted on May 9, 2010 at 12:48 AM

Science and religion have always been at loggerheads. Their disagreements have been many, varied and colourful, but centre around their opposing ontological approaches i.e. religion sees nature as spiritual and science sees nature as material. Mysticism goes beyond religion and science to combine both points of view.

Mysticism demands that its followers verify and question beliefs until they discover the truths themselves. Followers are called verifiers or seekers and should not accept doctrine, but question it; “In mysticism, then, we find a type of spirituality which has close epistemological parallels to science – a spirituality that begins with faith but ends in a certainty which each of us can and must discover in our own practice.” Joel Morwood.

The certainty of science has been damaged by quantum theory. The experimental approach is debunked as ‘facts’ recorded by empirical observations are flawed by the subjectivity of the senses. Time and space are no longer thought of as constant or linear; sub-atomic phenomena behave differently in the presence of observers and are now thought of in terms of both waves and particles. This idea demands a ‘complementarity’ or the necessity to hold two seemingly opposing ideas in the mind at the same time – something mystics are usually ridiculed for.” Quantum theory has led the physicists far away from the simple materialistic views that prevailed in the natural science of the nineteenth century.” Werner Heisenberg. This seems to suggest that the fundamental realities of mysticism and science are moving closer together.

Many scientists have published books that show the similarities between the beliefs of mysticism and science. Even Stephen Hawkings can ‘…see God in my equations.” People who believe they are ‘serious’ scientists say this is all stuff and nonsense. They claim that this is pop science and does nothing but get book deals and lucrative grants.

Still, the mystics smile knowingly and beckon us to the ‘dark side’, to enlightenment.

They claim that, in order to understand nature, we must abandon empiricism, materialism and knowledge itself in order to ‘know’. The truths of science are not the same as the mystical truths, although there was a time when we thought they were. Mystical truths are absolute; beyond concepts, subjectivity, culture and world views.

Whether you are on the side of science or religion, there is undeniable evidence of phenomena which cannot be explained solely by one side or the other. If we thought of both science and mysticism in terms of energy, we seem to be talking the same language.

In China, the essence of everything is believed to be ‘chi’ – a kind of divine energy which polarizes into yin and yang (positive and negative). In India, Brahman is the creative power flanked by Vishnu and Shiva. Matter is condensed energy; “By energising of consciousness, Brahman is massed; from that, matter is born and from matter, life and mind and the worlds… “Mundaja Upanishad. Tibetan philosophy also sees the essence of everything as a pulsing, dynamic energy or vibration. According to these approaches, ‘consciousness’ is simply an awareness of this energy. Mysticism is a way to lock into this energy – to channel, change, read and direct it. Practitioners initially learn from it, but with time and practice are able to use it to heal or change the environment around them. In a controlled lab experiment, Beverly Rubick (a biophysicist at San Francisco State University) tested the effects of psychic healers: “I knew when… I intoxicated my bacteria with a dose of a certain chemical agent, that indeed they would not swim. And what we found with some of the psychic healers … is that they were able to revive a certain percentage of them. We found about seven percent motility in that experiment, as I recall.”

In the wonderfully entertaining “What the Bleep Do We Know” – an insightful documentary explaining the ideas of energy and mysticism – Dr. Masaru Emoto conducts an experiment where droplets of water are frozen under controlled lab conditions. Before each droplet is frozen, the good doctor projected an emotion and phrase like “You make me sick” or “Love and gratitude”. The resulting ice formations leave us with much food for thought. "Half of the earth is water; our body is three-quarters water. Many studies have shown subtle effects of healers upon hydrogen bonding and infrared absorption of water. None of these scientific studies can compare with the beauty and clear messages shown by Dr. Emoto's elegant work. The impact of thought and beauty has never before been demonstrated so well."

It seems then that perhaps one may not have to entirely abandon spirituality in order to be scientific. In fact, our scientific endeavours are pointing to the fact that a more holistic, balanced way of thinking needs to be adopted if we are going to make any headway in the fields of science or spirituality.

Ok so science and spirituality have both come to find that all matter is energy. This energy is spiraling through the universe in many directions and speeds, vibrating and creating the laws that go with this movement. We just happen to be an awareness of all this energy. We see with a mind that is conditioned to block out much of what we consider to be unimportant energy. This is often subtler and softer forms of vibrations and energy. We focus on the extreme and dense forms as this is what was taught to us.
We are a body, a mind, and something else.
The body and mind both are animal. This being that they are subject to the millions of years of conditioning that has been applied to the genes. There are many dormant genes in our bodies that can be reactivated. The energy in our mind and body works in 7 different ways. The first being survival.
Survival is the biggest energy center in our being. It is conditioned into us to do what we need to do to survive. Survival is selfish. At this level of energy we are capable of doing anything, as animals will do, to survive. This is our greatest focus of energy.
Next up the energy chain is sexual energy. This is a built in deal. We are sexual creatures who need to reproduce. Our genes will bug us to do this until we have created offspring. These energies move through our bodies and minds so our thought patterns will match which energy center we are in. So in this truth our minds or our thoughts can move this energy. When we are conscious of this we can choose which energy center we would like to be in by choosing our thoughts. (If you do not choose your thoughts your thoughts will choose you because the body and mind have their own agendas.)
Of course there are rules or laws and moving energy or energy centers takes inner strength. It is a pulling of this energy up our nervous system with constant attention and focus. This is what Tantra was designed for. A practice to move energy with attention and a partner who can keep you focused.
*side note - seek the goddess
The next energy is power. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely unless you move it to the next energy center.
What is real power? Money? Might? Knowledge?
With this understanding there is a way to move this energy so that it doesn't destroy you.
CONSIDER EXTERNAL ALWAYS AND INTERNAL NEVER.
If you know something of the heart teach it. Passing on knowledge is a simple way of moving this energy to your heart and lets your true nature shine.
What we give so we receive. Learn the ways of the heart. Find out what unconditional love is and what this energy does. Explore this energy and your animal nature that tends toward destruction will be overcome. Express that love.

Yes, yes, yes you are on the right path here. As a studying sufi with an enlightened teacher I can say that humanity is coming to the same answers that the masters have been teaching. A sufi is a scientist of sorts in that everything must be proved. Each level of teaching has several paradoxes in the attempt to combat our old ways of thinking or shocking us to see something we can't, often called a sufi trick. My teaching comes from an ancient tradition of oral teaching passed down from teacher to student in person. This is important as it allows energy transfers to happen that are very subtle. Spirituality is often confused with religion one has rules one does not. As everyone is different, everyone has his or her own path. (side note- sufi's believe that only men need to be saved as women are already whole. Genetically this is true as proven by science.) My teacher is actually a scientist with several degrees and has been looking for god in the brain. What is the chemical process that happens when one is enlightened? What happens in the brain when we meditate, pray, love, laugh? Some very common experiences and the proof of what the masters have taught is finally being seen. The blue pearl that the Tibetans have taught about actually can be seen as a pooling of the energy in the brain through MRI's and EEG machines. The mysteries of the universe are known by a few and handed down to their students. It is a worthy pursuit to seek the knowledge and wisdom of these secret holders but not everyone is up to the task of being enlightened. Thanks to the new ways that we share knowledge our science is catching up with our spirituality. Thousands of years of combined knowledge has created many off shoot stories and powerful men who are corrupted by this power have created religions from these. Imagine an enlightened master trying to describe what a gene was a thousand years ago. He might create a story using common beliefs from the people he was teaching. He might call these genes gods and give them names and character traits for identification purposes. This could very easy turn into dogma and rules by those that want to control others. So much of the truth of existence is lost through these side stories. Miss communication by those not worthy of knowing the truth maybe. In any case by joining the two, science and spirituality, we can keep searching for the answers and if we are worthy enough, finding those answers too. Keep asking questions. You just might get an answer.

I have been observing (and sometimes participating) in the religion/science debate all my life, an issue which is be coming more widely debated of late.
I consider myself a rational man, and appreciate the intelligence and humour of Dawkins (and ilk), but am finding his scientific convictions to be somewhat fanatic, though not offensive as his religious counterparts, who are dim & dangerous people.
I read the above with some interest then - food for thought.
Thanks for that.
